LINCOLN - Five days after his last stint as Nebraska's interim head football coach, Mickey Joseph was arrested Wednesday afternoon and booked into Lancaster County Jail on charges of strangulation and third-degree domestic assault, according to a news release from the Lincoln Police Department.

Joseph, 54, was booked at 4:03 p.m. Although NU did not hire Joseph as its permanent head coach, he remained on the staff and was in talks to remain as an assistant under new coach Matt Rule, according to multiple sources. Joseph told the World Herald that he will also look at other coaching opportunities.

"I have been made aware of the allegations against Coach Joseph, and due to the nature of the allegations and per university policy, he has been placed on administrative leave. We will have no further comment at this time," Nebraska athletic director Troy Alberts said in a statement. "
Neither did the Lincoln Police Department beyond its brief press release, which said officers were dispatched to the scene at 1:54 p.m. to a South Lincoln residence on a distress call. Officers concluded their investigation and arrested Robert "Mickey" Joseph at another location. The victim was not named in the news release, which LPD said it released because of the "high profile" of the person involved.
Joseph was named Nebraska's interim head coach on September 11, 2022 and led the team to a 3-6 record - part of a 4-8 overall record - over the next 2 1/2 months. After NU beat rival Iowa on Black Friday, some players and an assistant coach lobbied for Joseph to become the team's permanent leader.
At Rolle's preseason news conference on Monday, Joseph was praised by Rolle and Alberts for his performance with the team, and Huskers pass rusher Ochon Mathis said on Twitter that he had spoken with Joseph about returning to the team or going to The team will consult. NFL.

Joseph, a former quarterback at Nebraska from 1988-91, was hired from Louisiana State University in December 2021 to become Lincoln's wide receivers coach. He was part of the staff that won the national title at LSU in 2019.

Joseph was promoted to interim head coach after the firing of Scott Frost. Joseph coached the team to a 3-6 record during his tenure. During the season, Joseph suspended one player, Myles Farmer, for driving under the influence.
After defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes on Black Friday last week, it was later announced that Matt Rolle had been hired as Nebraska's new head coach. No word yet on Joseph's retention status as Rolle's assistant. He has one year left on his contract, which would put him back in an assistant role if a new head coach is hired.
It is also noted that all arrests and charges are merely allegations. Arrested individuals and any related charges that may follow are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Nebraska athletic director Troy Alberts also issued a statement saying he was made aware of the matter and Joseph has been placed on administrative leave.
